PTE Score to IELTS in 2026 Compare Scores Before You Apply

You have a PTE Academic result, but the course page says “IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with no skill below 6.0.” A search for pte score to ielts can help you understand the two scales. What does the current overall score comparison show?

Go to the current English-language entry page for your exact course. Check whether it accepts PTE Academic, the overall minimum, each skill minimum and any validity period. Requirements may differ by course, professional body or visa route. If the page lists IELTS but not PTE, ask admissions for its accepted PTE scores rather than calculating your own and assuming approval.

Should an IELTS candidate switch to PTE?

First verify that your destination accepts both tests. Then try sample tasks for each format and consider your weaker skills and application deadline. IELTS Speaking involves a conversation with an examiner; PTE has different tasks and computer-based timing. A disappointing IELTS Writing result does not mean another test will automatically produce a qualifying score.

If you stay with IELTS, practise against its own assessment criteria and your required individual bands. If you switch, confirm the exact PTE test version and institutional thresholds before booking. Visa applications can have separate test-version and score rules, so check the relevant authority directly.
