Are IELTS Fees 100 Yuan Higher in Mainland China? IDP Deadline [2026]

Many IELTS candidates in mainland China have seen the same sentence recently, IELTS fees will rise by 100 yuan from October 1.

I checked the current official fee pages and separated the numbers. The story is more specific than the headline suggests. British Council IELTS moved the standard mainland fee from RMB 2,170 to RMB 1,990 for 2026. The 100-yuan change now being discussed mainly refers to an IDP promotional price of RMB 1,890 ending on September 30, with the listed standard price returning to RMB 1,990 on October 1.

That distinction matters if you are planning to book soon. You need to know which provider you are using, which IELTS test you need, whether the promotion depends on the booking date or test date, and whether booking early would disrupt your preparation.

01 Where does the 100-yuan increase come from?

Start with the timeline and the confusion becomes much easier to handle.

From January 1, 2026, the British Council fee schedule in mainland China set the standard IELTS fee at RMB 1,990 for both Academic and General Training. IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training also use a RMB 1,990 fee. Compared with the previous RMB 2,170 price, that was a decrease of RMB 180. The British Council line therefore did not suddenly become more expensive on October 1. Its 2026 adjustment had already happened at the beginning of the year.

The 100-yuan figure points to an IDP promotion in mainland China. The information in the topic brief says that IDP has offered a promotional fee of RMB 1,890 since launching its mainland service, with a promotional One Skill Retake fee of RMB 1,300. The promotion ends on September 30, and the listed fees return to RMB 1,990 and RMB 1,400 from October 1. In that timeline, the extra RMB 100 is the gap created when the promotion ends. It is not a single nationwide IELTS price increase affecting every test on the same day.

There is another date detail that candidates often miss. A promotion normally depends on completing the booking and payment before the stated deadline, not simply on taking the test before that date. If you book an October or November session before September 30, the final amount shown in your booking flow is what matters. Open the relevant official booking page, choose the location, test type and session, and check the amount before you pay.

I would not force an unready test date just to save RMB 100. A full IELTS booking is RMB 1,990, while a one-skill retake can cost RMB 1,400. Travel, accommodation and time away from work or school add to the total. Saving 100 yuan feels good, but one avoidable retake can erase that saving immediately. The fee deadline matters, and so do your target score and preparation timeline.

02 Which 2026 IELTS fees should you check?

Here is the practical fee map to keep in mind when you book in mainland China.

Regular IELTS Academic and General Training are listed at RMB 1,990. IELTS for UKVI Academic and General Training are also listed at RMB 1,990. The price is the same, but the purpose is different. If your university, employer, immigration route or UK visa page specifies one test, follow that wording. Do not choose only because the number looks familiar. Check the format and the current booking system as well, since the amount shown for your actual session is the safest confirmation.

IELTS for UKVI Life Skills is listed at RMB 1,250. It assesses Listening and Speaking for particular UK visa situations. It cannot replace a full four-skill IELTS or UKVI result when your application asks for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A lower fee is not a useful saving if the test type does not meet the requirement.

One Skill Retake is a separate charge. The British Council fee page lists RMB 1,400. It is intended for eligible computer-delivered candidates who have completed a full computer-delivered IELTS test and meet the registration window and other conditions. It can help someone who is short in one skill, but acceptance depends on the university, organisation or visa route. Confirm that point before you plan around a retake.

Transfer or cancellation fees are currently listed at RMB 380. Enquiry on Results is listed at RMB 1,400 for regular IELTS and IELTS for UKVI, while Life Skills uses a different fee. Extra paper Test Report Forms may also cost money after the included number of copies. A cancellation refund is not simply the original booking fee minus nothing. The amount depends on when you apply, and some requests may be unavailable after the deadline.

My view is that the most visible number on the booking page is only the first part of the bill. Choosing the wrong test type or overlooking a transfer rule can cost more than the advertised 100-yuan difference. Read the fee, eligibility and deadline together before deciding when to book.

03 Should you book before September 30?

There is no single answer for every candidate. Three checks can make the decision much clearer.

First, is your application timeline fixed? If a university, employer or visa route requires a result in the next few months, and you have already confirmed the test type, target score and latest acceptable result date, booking before the promotion deadline may be sensible. The session still needs to fit your city, schedule and Speaking arrangement. A cheap session that creates a travel problem is not necessarily the best session.

Second, how close are your practice results to the target? For Listening and Reading, look at accuracy across several complete practice sets. For Writing, check whether you can answer the task fully within the time limit. For Speaking, listen for long pauses, repeated words and answers that stop before they develop. One good practice result is not enough evidence. A stable pattern tells you more. If you are still learning the question types or one skill is far behind the others, building a workable routine may be worth more than saving RMB 100.

Third, have you checked and saved the exact fee and rules from the booking page? Social-media screenshots travel quickly, but a screenshot is not your order. Confirm the test type, session, price, transfer or cancellation deadline and identity-document rules. Check the spelling of your name one more time before payment.
